CAMPANELLA PROGRAMS: HARMONY CHOIR

Registration deadline: 09/01/2020

Grades 3-5

Instructor: Marianna Kosaya

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
FALL SEMESTER: 09/12/2020 - 01/17/2021

No classes: November 26-27; December 24-January 3.

SUBJECTS OFFERED:

Choir singing (small group outside, to move online at the cold weather)

Choristers explore the joy of musical expression and the self-esteem that grows from skillful choral singing. Singers work on establishing healthy singing and breathing habits, singing with good intonation, and learning to read musical notation. Students learn to sing in unison and in two parts, enhance articulation, focusing on the major vowels and consonants, learn to manage breathing when singing and control the evenness of sound.

Singers will have an opportunity to participate in the virtual choir project at the end of the semester.

Music Theory and Classical Music Education

Course designed to help the students study the basic elements of music. Topics include notation, rhythm, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, beginning level melodic and rhythm dictation, ear-training and sight singing skills. The course will also include classical music appreciation and understanding, and studying composers biographies and the historical contexts in which the music was written.

Musical theater (a supplemental choir classes project)

We will create a virtual musical performance, where students will try many different hats – from creating visual support and costumes to playing characters and singing musical parts. We will produce a musical play for the end-of-semester virtual concert.

OUTSIDE IN-PERSON REHEARSALS:

For the small-group in person rehearsals, we have arranged an outdoor space under the tent at the North Suburban YMCA lawn.

Address:

North Suburban YMCA, 2705 Techny Rd, Northbrook, IL 60062

Directions:

Campanella banner will be put at the YMCA parking entrance, look for the large white tent on the lawn by the south side of the building.

So far we have an agreement to use the space until November (weather permitting, we might stay there longer or shorter). The space is equipped with a sturdy tent, and benches/chairs. The inside YMCA restrooms are accessible to students. Hand sanitizer and disposable masks will be provided. We will be wearing masks and keep a 6’ distance during the outside activities.
